Apartment NK 57 is located in a 100-year-old building in the center of Sofia. We are renovating it completely — not just the kitchen, but every room has been redesigned. The project is in the process of implementation.

First, a structural assessment of the old building

Before starting and assessing what changes to the areas are possible, we consulted a structural engineer to check the quality and condition of the old building. After the demolition, everything superfluous was removed, and the building was left with only the concrete slabs (floor and ceiling) and brick walls, a clean foundation on which to build anew.

High ceilings and smart heating

The original ceilings are 3.20m high. After the installation of the heating system and a new suspended ceiling with insulation, the height remains an impressive close to 3.00m – an advantage that emphasizes the aristocratic character of the home, although the rooms themselves are not particularly wide. We integrate electric wall heating in the living room (there is a wooden parquet floor), and in the corridor, bathroom and toilet – floor heating under the tiles.

Maximum storage for a family of four

The apartment is for a family of two adults and two children, who also cook a lot, so we thought about how to fit a maximum of wardrobes and storage spaces in each room. The kitchen couldn’t be moved from its original, narrow location, so we completely redesigned it architecturally—more cabinets, altered door openings, and a large laundry room.

Warm and welcoming, yet aristocratic – with soft, flowing shapes

The style is very specific: both warm and welcoming, and aristocratic. We opted for soft edges and smooth, rounded shapes — for wardrobes and in the kitchen — that soften the space and give it character and elegant softness.

Frequently asked questions

Why start the renovation of an old building with a structural engineer?+
Because the condition of a 100-year-old building determines what changes in the premises are possible. For NK 57, we first did a design consultation before planning any area changes.
Do you keep the high ceilings when renovating?+
Yes, as much as possible. For the NK 57, the original 3.20 m remains close to 3.00 m even after a heating system and a new insulated ceiling - a height that gives the home an aristocratic character.
How do you provide enough storage for a family?+
By planning storage in each room. For NK 57 (a family of two adults and two children), we integrated maximum wardrobes everywhere, and the kitchen, which remains in its original narrow place, was architecturally restructured for more cupboards and a large laundry room.
What is the style of the NK 57?+
Warm and welcoming, yet aristocratic. We opted for soft edges and smooth, rounded shapes for the wardrobes and the kitchen, which soften the space and give it character.
